Why was my card declined?
Usually an available balance issue, a limit, a frozen card, or the merchant's country or category being blocked. The card detail page shows the decline reason.
Open Cards → select card → Recent activity: declines are listed with a reason.
Common causes, in order of likelihood
- Available balance too low. Pending authorisations reduce what you can spend.
- Card is frozen — check the toggle in online banking.
- Card not yet activated, or past its expiry date.
- A limit was hit — per-transaction, daily spend, or ATM withdrawal.
- Wrong details entered online — the security code, expiry or billing address must match exactly what we hold.
- Country or merchant category blocked in your card controls.
- Fraud monitoring stopped an unusual pattern — an unfamiliar country, an unusually large amount, or several rapid attempts.
Travelling?
Add a travel notice under Cards → Controls before you go, and check that the destination country is permitted. That prevents the most common travel decline.
If none of this applies
Repeated declines with no clear reason should be reported. Raise a support ticket with the date, time, amount, merchant and the last four digits of the card — never the full number.
Did this not solve it?
Raise a support ticket from inside online banking and a specialist will answer with your account in front of them — or contact us if you cannot sign in.
