Open a business account in 6 steps
Nothing here is a surprise on the day. Read it through, gather what you need, and the application itself is straightforward.
Choose the right account
Business checking for day-to-day operations, a treasury account for multi-currency and liquidity management, or both. A specialist can help you decide if the fit is not obvious.
- Business checking — operating account for payments and payroll
- Treasury — multi-currency, sweeping and FX
- Merchant services — if you need to accept card payments
Gather the company documents
We verify the entity as well as the people behind it, so have the constitutional documents and details for every director and beneficial owner to hand.
- Certificate of incorporation or business registration
- Memorandum and articles, or the equivalent constitutional document
- Proof of registered business address
- ID and proof of address for every director, authorised signatory and beneficial owner holding 25% or more
Describe the business
What you sell, to whom, how you get paid, expected monthly turnover and your main trading countries. Be specific — a vague description is the most common cause of delay.
Set your mandate and users
Decide who can prepare payments, who can release them, and above what value a second approver is required. Every signatory gets their own login — shared credentials are never permitted.
- View only — bookkeepers and auditors
- Initiator — prepares payments
- Approver — releases payments
- Administrator — manages users and rules
Verification and approval
We verify the entity and each individual, and run sanctions and adverse-media checks. You will be notified at each stage, and any request for more information appears as a task.
Fund and go live
On approval, users are created with the permissions you specified and your banking details appear in online banking. Fund the account and you are trading.
What you will need
Have these ready and the application takes minutes. Documents that are expired, cropped or do not match the name on the application are the single most common cause of delay.
Photographing documents
Flat, dark, non-reflective surface in good natural light. All four corners in frame, no glare across the text or photograph.
Certificate of incorporation
Or the equivalent business registration document for your jurisdiction.
Constitutional documents
Memorandum and articles of association, or equivalent.
Proof of registered address
A recent document showing the registered business address.
Ownership structure
Current structure identifying all beneficial owners holding 25% or more.
Identification for each individual
Photo ID and proof of address for every director, signatory and beneficial owner.
Business profile
Nature of the business, expected turnover, main trading countries and principal counterparties.
Never email your documents
Upload them only through the secure screen in the application or in online banking. Optimal MetroHub Bank will never ask you to send identity documents by email or message.
Answered before you ask
How do I open a business account?
Apply online with your registration documents and details for every director and beneficial owner. Approval typically takes two to five working days.
- Choose the account. Business checking, a treasury account, or a multi-currency structure — the business pages compare them.
- Gather your documents. Certificate of incorporation, constitutional documents, proof of registered address, plus identification and proof of address for every director, authorised signatory and beneficial owner holding 25% or more.
- Complete the application. Include the nature of the business, expected monthly turnover, main trading countries and your principal counterparties.
- Verification. We verify the entity and each individual, and run sanctions and adverse-media checks.
- Approval and setup. On approval, users are created for each signatory with the permissions you specified.
What causes delays
- Ownership structures involving holding companies or trusts, which require documents for each layer until the ultimate individuals are identified.
- Directors resident in different countries, each needing separate verification.
- A vague description of business activity. Be specific about what you sell, to whom, and how you get paid.
How do I manage signatories, users and approval rules?
Each signatory gets their own login and permission set. Approval rules can require two or more people to release a payment.
Individual logins
Every person who touches the account gets their own credentials. Shared logins are never permitted: they destroy the audit trail and make it impossible to tell who authorised what.
Permission levels
- View only — sees balances and statements, cannot transact. Ideal for bookkeepers and auditors.
- Initiator — prepares payments but cannot release them.
- Approver — releases payments prepared by others.
- Administrator — manages users and approval rules, usually a director.
Approval rules
Set thresholds so that payments above a chosen amount require a second — or third — approver. Separating who prepares a payment from who releases it is the single most effective control against both internal fraud and invoice scams.
Making changes
Adding or removing a signatory, or changing approval rules, requires a mandate instruction from the authorised persons on record. Raise a support ticket to start it; changes are usually applied within one to two working days once verified.
Review your user list whenever someone leaves. A dormant login belonging to a former employee is a serious and very common risk.
What documents do I need to open an account?
A government-issued photo ID and a proof of address dated within the last three months. Business accounts also need company registration documents.
Personal accounts
- Photo identification — a valid passport, national identity card or driving licence. It must be unexpired and show your full name, date of birth and photograph.
- Proof of address — a utility bill, bank statement, tax notice or government letter issued in the last three months, showing your name and residential address. Mobile phone bills and screenshots are not accepted.
- Tax identification — your tax identification number and country of tax residency.
Business accounts
- Certificate of incorporation or business registration.
- Memorandum and articles of association, or the equivalent constitutional document.
- Proof of registered business address.
- Identification and proof of address for every director, authorised signatory and beneficial owner holding 25% or more.
- A short description of the business activity, expected turnover and main trading countries.
How to submit them
Documents are uploaded through the secure upload screen in your application or, once you have an account, under Profile → Verification. Accepted formats are JPG, PNG and PDF up to 5 MB per file. Never email documents to anyone claiming to be from Optimal MetroHub Bank — see What we will never ask you for.
Photograph documents on a flat, dark surface in good light. Blurred edges, glare and cropped corners are rejected automatically and add days to your application.
How long does account approval take?
Most personal applications are decided within one working day. Business and treasury applications typically take two to five working days.
Timelines depend on the product and on how quickly your documents pass verification.
| Application type | Typical decision time |
|---|---|
| Personal checking or savings | Same working day to 1 working day |
| Personal card or overdraft facility | 1–2 working days |
| Business or merchant account | 2–5 working days |
| Treasury, lending or corporate facility | 5–10 working days, plus a relationship call |
What can slow it down
- Documents that are expired, unreadable, cropped or do not match the name on the application.
- A proof of address older than three months.
- Complex ownership structures on business accounts, which require additional beneficial-owner checks.
- Applications submitted outside working hours or over a public holiday.
You will receive an email whenever the status changes. If your application has been pending noticeably longer than the times above, sign in and raise a support ticket so the onboarding team can look at your specific case.
