How do I keep my devices safe for banking?
Keep software updated, lock the device, avoid public Wi-Fi for banking, and only install apps from official stores.
The essentials
- Install updates promptly. Most attacks use flaws that were already patched.
- Lock every device with a PIN, password or biometric.
- Install apps only from official stores and check the publisher before installing.
- Never install remote access software because someone asked you to over the phone. This is the mechanism behind most large impersonation losses.
- Use your mobile data rather than public Wi-Fi for banking. If you must use public Wi-Fi, use a reputable VPN.
- Sign out properly on shared or borrowed devices, and never save the password there.
Warning signs your device is compromised
- Sudden battery drain, overheating or a spike in data usage.
- Apps you do not remember installing.
- Being signed out repeatedly, or passcodes arriving that you did not request.
- Browser pages or pop-ups asking for banking details on unrelated sites.
If you suspect a compromise, stop banking on that device. Change your password from a different, trusted device, sign out everywhere, and contact us.
