Overdrafts, unpaid items and what they cost
An arranged overdraft is agreed in advance and charged at a known rate. Unarranged shortfalls cause payments to be returned and may incur a fee.
Arranged overdraft
A pre-agreed limit you can dip into. Interest is charged only on the amount used and only for the days you use it. Your limit and rate are shown under Accounts.
Unarranged shortfall
If a payment is presented and there is not enough available balance and no arranged facility, it is returned unpaid. That may carry a fee, and the party expecting the payment will see it fail — which can matter more than the fee itself.
Avoiding it
- Set a low-balance alert under Profile → Notifications.
- Check your scheduled payments calendar before the end of the month.
- Remember that available balance, not current balance, funds a payment.
- Fund the account the day before a scheduled payment, not the morning of.
If you are struggling
Contact us early. We can discuss an arranged facility, adjust repayment dates, or agree a temporary arrangement. Talking to us before a payment fails always gives you more options than talking to us afterwards.
